What is Tarragona Cathedral?

Tarragona Cathedral is a jewel of Catalan heritage whose walls preserve a history that dates back more than 2,000 years. A church with a Romanesque floor plan, the imposing central nave is surprisingly luminous, with an impressive Gothic rose window on the main façade, as well as a magnificent Renaissance organ and a wonderfully detailed Gothic altarpiece on the main altar. And we mustn’t forget the cloister, a veritable haven of peace. A true monument of Tarragona that should not be missed!

The different parts of the Cathedral, witnesses to more than two centuries of history

Tarragona Cathedral

Located on the highest point of the city of Tarragona, the Cathedral was built on the site where the Temple of Augustus used to stand, at the time of the Roman city of Tarraco. These are the oldest remains that can be seen throughout the different parts of the Cathedral, which boasts more than 2,000 years of history, but visitors can also admire its Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque past.
